Default C&D reviews the A5 space frame - shaves 500lbs off

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...rototype_drive

They shaved 500 lbs off the EU spec 3.2 V6 A5 by using the space frame, lots more aluminum and paired the lighter car with the 2.0T engine. then they dialed the 2.0T in Tq to match the same output as the V6:

Audi let us compare a stock A5 3.2 FSI, equipped with the 265-hp V-6, against the lightweight concept with the 2.0-liter engine dialed back from 258 pound-feet of torque to deliver the same 243 as the V-6.

The resulsts?

...the A5 V-6 ran from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, so we expect the lightweight concept to hit 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, a 0.7-second improvement over a standard A5 2.0T.
.3 seconds faster than the V6, and .7 faster than the stock A5 with the 2.0T.

Very cool... Unfortunately I quickly think about how much more that is going to cost.

If I have the cash, I definitely won't complain about an S4 that's 500lbs lighter

ha ha, I just noticed they talk about "sound engineering: A speaker amplifies the engine to man things up"

Tech like that IMO is another decade out for anything lower than A6.

And image the insurance cost to cover aluminum frame cars.

BTW, is there any aluminum panels on the S4? They seem to say standard A5 has aluminum panels in the front (hood and quarter panels).

This seems like a moot point to me. Next to no one repairs damaged monocoques (steel, aluminum, or carbon) That's what insurance is for. Sub-Frame damage = write off in 95% of cases (I made that number up).

Honda's been using little speakers on some models for a few years now to give the slamming doors a more solid, "thunkier" sound.

I read about this in several mag's (R&T and C&D I believe) five or six years ago - can't remember what models - could be in Acura's.
