S4 startup rattle

It's great that you had the TSB taken care of and the rattle is gone. Let's hope it doesn't return, like many have reported in this forum post (along with suffering collateral damage), over at the Audizine forum:

The timing chain pretensioner noise has been discussed many times, in many of the sub-forums on this site, as a number of models have used the EA837 3.0TFSI supercharged engine. North America, or perhaps even just the USA, is the only region in which Audi issued a TSB. It is at worst a 2 to 5 second annoyance, and can cause no damage to the engine.
J. Patterson, you have a good dealer!

My 2015 S5 had developed a cold start timing chain rattle over the last few thousand miles. It was pretty noticeable if the engine had been shut down more than 24 hours before restarting. My warranty was about to end this month so I went ahead and addressed it with the dealer. They agreed that the service bulletin applied and this work needed to be done. It was pretty trouble free. I dropped it off on a Friday. It sat over the weekend. They listened to it on Monday and heard the rattle. They ordered the parts and by Friday it was finished. The coldstart rattle is totally gone. I have driven it two thousand miles since the work was done and have allowed it to sit for over 36 hours a couple of times before restarting. Quiet and solid. I did ask my service advisor whom I have dealt with for years if I could have the most senior tech do the job. She was happy to accommodate me on that and everything went great. Kudos to Audi of Birmingham for taking care of it.

I’m new here and just adding a data point.
My 2015 A6 3.0T started the startup rattle about 1,000 miles ago. My car currently has 99K miles.
I’ve been following posts on this for a while. I decided to try something yesterday, this is what I did:
I put a 1/2 bottle of liqui-moly engine flush in the crank, ran it for about 10 minutes then drained the oil and refilled with 20W-50 oil.
it went from rattling every startup for 5 seconds to rattle free 90% of the time, when it does rattle it lasts maybe 1 second. I’ll probably wait 1K miles and do the same procedure over again.
My pet theory is this involves a sticking check valve somewhere, likely due to varnish.
