30,000 mile update
So, I had the 30k service done today. Bought the car new in September, 2017. Car is fine. A few points:
1. Break pads were replaced at 17k miles. The dealer let me know I am less than 2mm away from the sensor going off. So I’ll assume at this point the pads and my driving style are good for for somewhere around 17k miles. I will be buying replacement pads online and not going through the dealer this time (the last experience was so bad I switched dealerships for service).
2. Front tires are at the wear bar (I knew this going in) and rears are almost there. I replaced the stock Contis with Michelin PS4s at 14.5k miles. If memory serves, they are warrantied for 20k miles, so I’ll see if I can get replacements on the Michelin Man.
Otherwise, the car is rock solid. I still love it. Mileage should be lower over the next year as my work driving has changed. Lastly, the car still has not burned a drop of oil between services.

Just a quick comment on brake pads:
This is the first car ive owned where I didn't cook the pads and rotors in less than 10k miles = heavy foot.
Although I'm sure the OEM's are pricey......I'd be inclined to stick with what works.
With 23k miles on the clock, and I should be about halfway through my pads by now, based on my last trip to the dealership at 20k.

No mention of looming pad life issues at my 20,000 mile visit. I do a lot of highway though, I'd say a solid 30-40% of my current mileage is road trip induced where I drove 400+ miles a day while touching the brake pedal maybe five times total. I also have the sport differential, which if I understand correctly reduces/replaces the understeer mitigation technique of brake-based torque vectoring...not sure to what degree that helps with pad life but I would like to assume it at least helps a little.

did anyone pay in advance for the brake service? the finance guy who also owns an s4 said the pads and rotors will need to be replaced before 20k so i agreed and added it to my lease. he also said the audi care is worthless and to not get that.

As far as Audi Care yea its worthless I wish I never got it.....as far brakes almost 30k miles on them only half worn out... I guess it depends driving style... some guys in this forum I think they had their brakes replaced by 10k miles
