add one subwoofer or 2?
i have the standard audio system in my 19 s4 and hate it.
from what ive read, a custom subwoofer will make a huge difference. i havent had custom audio in my car in forever and was wondering your guys thoughts on:
1. one sub or two?
2. placed in the trunk or replace the actual sub on the rear deck?
3. what size sub is in the rear deck?
looking at JL audio 12inch

Funny, I'm neck deep in an epic stereo upgrade project to answer this and other questions about the stereo.
For the subwoofer I think you have some options
1. Find a DVC 8 ohm sub and install it (really the only one is the JL TW3 and I talked to JL about it and they said it wouldn't play deep bass in free air.)
2. Install a DVC 4 ohm sub in the factory location. I did a bunch of math on this and I think it should be fine. You won't damage the amp for certain but may distort at extremely high power outputs due to inductor saturation (I am unable to verify the capacity of the output inductor). I'm going to do this exact job with a Kicker CompC this weekend in my own car.
3. Install an amp in the trunk and drive whatever you want. Alpine amps have the ability to turn on from sensing the high level inputs so you don't need to worry about finding the remote signal sense and plus the battery is in the trunk.
4. Cut another hole in the rear deck and install 2 4 ohm DVC subs (8 ohms per channel) and drive with the factory amp or your own amp. The fake grill above this location is blocked
5. Sub box in the trunk but loses trunk space.
Soon I'll publish a very large report and guide on this.

It came from outer bass
I just completed installing a Kicker CompC 10 DVC 4 ohm sub into the car. I connected each output to one coil. Bass is a bit louder, a lot deeper, and crazily accurate and precise. I can't wait to see how it does after break in. Right now it's rock solid to 28Hz, and -3dB at 27Hz.
If you want to go boom, you'll need an amp.
