The smaller trim down lower you squeeze the sides where it clips into the actual mirror base and rotate towards you. It's actually a bit of a pain to away from the mirror but pushing the mirror down and to one side helps. Once inside you will see an 8 pin plug and there is a solid yellow wire (accessory power) and a brown wire next to it (ground). You will want to use those wires to power up a radar detector or camera, etc.

I also pulled the upper light/sunroof control setup down so I could tuck the V1 adapter and extra cord in that area. That takes some serious prying to release and the main clip is up front that goes into the roof. I slid the yellow and brown wires out of the plug with a pick and made a small adapter that fed power to the V1 adapter and then passed the power/ground back to the plug for the mirror, but you could tap off those wires after removing some of the tape.

Cheers!
Very clean install.. looks great! Is that a blendmount, or are you using suction cups?

Thank you. That is the standard V1 suction cup mount as far up as it can possibly go. Looks clean, works well.

Cheers,

I admit defeat. I have a Uniden R3 and was looking forward to a clean mirror tap install. After reading through this thread and a few others on the board, I felt pretty confident in my ability to install it myself. I spent an hour trying to remove the large trim piece between the headliner and mirror. I was able to unclip the side clips, but could not get the 2 front clips. After breaking my trim removal tool, I decided to stop lest I break something important and expensive. I visited a local stereo and auto electronics shop. They didn’t fare much better. According to whatever intrusctions they were following, the only correct way to access the mirror tap is to start with the small trim piece below the mirror and work upwards. They also concluded that that would necessitate removing the mirror, which they didn’t feel comfortable doing. I explained to them the success others have had only removing the large trim cover, but they weren’t convinced and declined to try it. I give them credit for not proceeding any further once they didn’t feel comfortable with it, but I’m surprised and disappointed that this has proved so challenging. I may visit another shop to get a second opinion. But at this point, I may accept this as a sign and just use the 12v accessory plug near the cup holders. Unless, of course, anyone in Colorado wants to give me a hand

Check with your dealer as they may have a guy that does after market stuff...My dealer did (I'm in Connecticut) and that person did it for me with no issues for around an hours worth of labor. I had the cord and remote control unit.

That big plastic piece just under the homelink buttons can be a BEAR to unhinge.

I nearly gave up the first time I went in there -- but if you locate those tabs on the corners, and get a set of needle nose pliers in there to squeeze them, they will eventually release.

I accidentally "ripped" my mirror off just last week when I was trying to remove everything, and the irony is - I didn't realize the the mirror and both lower plastic pieces come off WITH the mirror!!

AND, in fact - the mirror can be easily removed simply by twisting the base counterclockwise by about 15 degrees.

If you reference the pictures I posted earlier in this thread, you'll see the base has a metal "twist-lock" mount that is quite easy to remove from the permanent attachment affixed to the glass.
I'm not going to repost the pics.....just study them, and trust what I'm telling you -- grab the whole assembly and twist it counterclockwise, and voila.....it will detach.

You will still need to unhook the dual pin power connection that connects the mirror....but that's alot easier than removing that big plastic piece.

Good luck -- and don't get too discouraged.

I didn't want to tackle the mirror tap so I tucked the wires under the headliner, ran them down the pillar down to the fuse box located under the dead pedal and tapped power from there. Done in less than 5 mins. Mine doesn't shut off with Auto S/S.

Fair enough.
After I had a fuse blow for no apparent reason, I decided to "pull the plug" on the mirror tap.
If I feel the need to wire mine more stealthily in the future, I too will go the long wire / tuck in the headliner method.

Simply no need at present to be so stealthy.

I bit the bullet and got my local shop (Sound Waves Bartlett, TN) to install. Great job and looks awesome. I got the Escort Max360c with mirror mount.
