I'm in NY where front plates are also required.. I actually don't mind having the plate on there -- partially because I've always had a front plate since I started driving but I also think Audi's front plate mount is better than some of the other front plate mounts I've had on previous cars that have protruded out from the front. At least it sits flush on my car. I also use a plain black frame on my front and rear plates.

How do you remove the blank plate cover?

Super easy. Just insert a flat trim tool on one side and pry the side up. Then it'll just pop out. Its easier with a small flat blade screwdriver but it will leave a mark on the edge as the plastic is soft.

I don't understand the point of those removable front plate holders. You need to have it on all the time, and it hangs down under the bumper where is can get caught on parking curbs and it blocks more of the intercooler than the factory plate holder.

You can put it on if you're parking in a public spot and for CHP inspection for the fix-it ticket after you get pinched.

I never liked sporting a front license plate when I was younger. I had a motorized version of the hideaway plate holder on my MKV GTI so anytime I was anywhere near CHP I would press the button and out it comes.

Sounds like too much work. Plus you have to have it when you are driving.
