Homelink range?

I'm going to put the Genie external remote on my opener this weekend and put a really long antenna on it too.

I installed the genie dual frequency conversion kit on my opener today to replace the old dip switch based receiver from the 90's. Both were Genie products and had almost identical enclosures. The installation manual was le terrible. After that I paired the two remotes it came with with relative ease. Getting the homelink setup was a huge PITA and ended up with a call to homelink technical support, who was very patient and helpful BTW. Also a human answered the line immediately which was also appreciated. Here's how I got it set up:
1. Start the button programming normally where it asks you to hold the remote under the mirror. They said to hold it a few inches below the mirror. Press and hold the button until it fails. Retry. I had to retry 4 times and then finally the car asked if I wanted to Synchronize with the opener now. Don't click anything. Just leave it at that screen.
2. Jump out of the car and go press the learn button on the receiver just like you did when setting up the remotes.
3. Run back to your car (you only have 30 seconds) and click Yes you want to synchronize.
4. Press the button you are programming just long enough for the green light to come on and release it. Immediately press it again. Ignore the display question about it working or not that pops up after the first press.
5. After the second press it should be working. You can test it as many times as you like while it waits for your response about if it's working or not.
6. Assuming it's working, click Yes.
This unit doesn't have a nice coax antenna connection like the Chamberlain unit a couple posts up. Just a wire hanging out of the box. I calculated a full wave antenna for 350 MHz (average of the two frequencies it uses) at 2'8" so I stripped the wire at the end and attached some leftover wire from the kit until the total length was 2 foot 8 inches. It looks dodgy as hell but works great. I haven't tested for maximum range as I live on a hill and I can't really see more than 3 houses away when I drive down the hill, but it works that far which is 260 feet.
