Leaking Drive Axle?
Had my wheels off yesterday doing a rotation, and took a few moments to look around in the wheel wells -- not real pleased to find my driver-side axle covered in something greasey, as well as the lower control arm obviously coated in the same grease.
15k miles.
Add this to my list of complaints of things that aren't getting inspected or noticed during all too regular visits and Multi-point inspections at my dealership.
.....I'm thinking, an ounce of prevention.....???

Agreed.
But at 15k miles?? I can''t wait for them to try and tell me it's wear and tear. HA!
Pretty sure that's covered by Powertrain anyway.....
Just surprised to see that. I drive the car like it's MEANT to be driven, but I most assuredly don't abuse it.

In for the update...if for no other reason that to learn what the quote is.
The only issue I ever had with my previous car (Honda Accord) was having to replace a CV axle at 40,000 miles, but the V6 on that car was known for eating them. $800 part if you wanted OEM.

an entire axle assembly from genuine audi parts is $998, so that plus labor would be the total cost. I would be really surprised if it was torn though, you can see the boot is properly attached, and they are thick boots that would require high effort to tear. It's probably just dirt/grease from assembly. I'll check mine this weekend and see if it's the same/different.

Update: went in for 20K OCI.
Had them inspect this build up of goo on the UCA/LCA, and drive axle.
I was told this is some kind of parafin-based undercoating that is used at the factory, that is "liquifiying" and leaking down onto these components.
Call me crazy - but I've never heard THAT one before.
To be fair -- I've been complaining about the same mystery "goo" forming on my passenger's side Headlamp assembly, under the hood. Looks like grease, and collects dust and road debris -- looks like oil collecting.
I accepted the answer (since I don't know any better with an Audi) and moved on. No issues with drive or odd sounds from drivetrain, except a little knocking in cold weather from the suspension.
Everything else with the car is copacetic - and brake pads were at 7's, which I thought was great! These pads are obviously biased for the street.
No news is good news.

@GR - obviously no idea if it serves as a reasonable explanation for your specific car's issue, but that undercoating story is a real thing. I have seen mention of it elsewhere on these forums. Applies to all Audis.

Yeah - it's more plausible since I've noticed and been asking about that puddle of goo on the pass. headlamp.
Which seems to pool at the lowest point of the hoodline, and stand to reason for this material liquefying as it warms under the engine bay.
I'll accept it, and move on.
thanks
