Does anyone know for sure if the '01s have the immobilizer? My '01 did not have a credit on the window sticker for no immobilizer so I am assuming that it might have it.

Does anyone know for sure?

ah... what is "immobilizer" and what does it do?

This is what I did: I dissected the head of that little plastic spare key that came with the car. I carefully removed the chip. I went out and tried to start my car with the chipless key. If the car starts, no immobilizer. My car started.

I put the key back together and it's as good as new.

if we don't have immobilizer on out '01's then we are supposed to get a credit of $300(?) listed off the msrp printed on the sticker. At least, this is what the recent word is. The $38900 msrp on 2001 S4's include Immobilizer.

I've heard anything after build week 23 has the immobilizer. (for A6's anyway)

They say that most, but not all of the 2001 S4s are supposed
to have the Immobilizer. It's not listed in any literature, in
brochures or on the web, but they can pull up that information
at Audi.

Prior to '01, only the A6 2.7T and A8 have the Immobilizer.
However, the '00s have the chips in the key and the smarts
in the ECU, but it's disabled. They also claimed that it would be
a simple upgrade by your Audi dealer.

I called my dealer, because I'm concerned about the secuirty of
my '00 S4, and they didn't know much about it except that it
would require changing the lock cylinder since the electronics
don't exist in the ignition. This would cost major $$.<p>DougA4
