Just like my '96 A4 2.8 12v FWD in 5th -- Meaning: S4 has 6 gears for the same top gear as A4 w/5

There torque seems to be there, and you could just downshift to 5th for extra oomph if needed.

actually, 100mph in 6th is under 4 grand. More like 3850.

is having rpm's too low for the load at that speed. The rpm's match with oil distribution.. in other words, the faster the engine turns, the faster the oil moves. So, if you slow the engine down at that speed (like if you decide to raise the ratio/lower the number) then the load may cause the engine to wear excessively. Just something to think about. I don't know where the breakeven point is.
