3M Autobahnd ??
Has anybody heard of some sort of film made by 3M that is supposed to protect the nose from stone damage ?? My dealer is trying to push it on me for $500 and I think it is kind of tacky but I don't really know anything about it. Is it indeed a waste of money or is it actually useful ??
Deno

Re: 3M Autobahnd ??
It seems popular in North America. Real car enthusiasts have the stone chips taken care of by the detailer.
I understand everybody in New York has a shrink - well here in Europe we have our own detailers.
Probably six of one.....

If you could have seen the German Auto Industry Honcho shudder when I talked to him about Bustenhalteren, you would not be asking.
I can see his point, it is defacing.
By the way, one of the old time American Porsche Maven of my acquaintance, who drives a 959, shudders in a similar manner at the thought of deliberately sticking defacing sticky stuff on his car.
Another of my friends, British, not European, turned down a number of beautiful Ferraris because, in the European manner, they were exhibited with their paint chips still present, but cleaned up, Euro buyers of quality cars prefer to see what has to be done to clean up the car, making it that much more difficult to pass off major repainting as chip touch up. Predictably enough, he bought the 348 Spyder that another dealer had cleaned up.
So chip protection is a cultural thing.

3M Scotchcal is the material. $500 seems on the high side depending (m)
upon what it covers. There are a number of companies that sell the material as kits precut for the S4. Some people have done the install themselves. I have the X-pel kit. It looked to be the best value and from a company with great customer support. I plan on having a window tinting shop with experience in this type of work do the application for me. Is it worth it? You would be hard pressed to notice it if you didn't know it was there. Most come with a protection guarantee, typically about three years. I'm interested in protecting my car. It is worth it to me.
2001 S4 (Debadged)

I had it done they call it
an invisable bra. It's virtually invisable -- I'm pleased as we get a lot of salt and sand on the roads in the winter. I purchased mine from acompany called leading edge.
