'99 A6 Avant with dual exhaust???

Default '99 A6 Avant with dual exhaust???
Spotted one in Norwalk, CT on Saturday night. Owner said it was the first time he noticed the different exhaust. Apparently, it came stock this way. Can this be true?

Default Yup, it's true
A6 (both Avant and sedan I believe) have one exhaust outlet on each side of the car. Not sure how it differs forward of the rear mufflers though.
