Default ABS Controller Update

Just to update on the previous post,

I tested all wires according to Bentley and found no problems. Instrument cluster tests fine, but VAG cannot get ABS to perform function checks. According to post below, I had the same symptoms and gave the controller a slight whack with a rubber tip hammer and VAG connected briefly and then disconnected. I think it is safe to say that after hours and hours of trying to hunt down a gremlin, I can safely assume my ABS unit is shot. Please get everyone you can who has had this problem submit a complaint at www.nhtsa.dot.gov so they can investigate and hopefully get us a recall. I can't wait with this northeastern weather, so does anyone know where we can get the pump/controller for less than the $1300 it costs from the STEALership?

Bentley ABS discussion

Default If you have other means of transportation you can have it rebuilt at AutoECU.com or you can get a -

used controller from Car-Parts.Com but you run the risk of it failing. The rebuild is $350 with a 5yr warranty and it takes about 7 days with shipping (I'm still waiting for mine). A used one can run you anywhwere from $150-$300 and you can usually get a 1yr warranty. I also can't wait for a recall with this weather. I hope that helps.

Default One more thing...

On the wiring diagram No. 81/1, what/where is the circle item labeled A91 (see arrow in picture)? I don't know what it is or how to test it.

Sorry for the crappy scanned page!

Default Part numbers & prices

ETKA says

8E0614111E for cars with EDL
8E0614111AT for cars with ESP (my 2001 and on)
- this is the same part as A4, A6, Allroad

8E0614111AT replaces 8E0614111AA replaces 8E0614111T

You can probably get one cheap from wreckers like Dad's Auto (STFA) however I would tend to shy away from using brake controller from a car that had been in an accident ...

VW Parts for AT Part

Default Another possible fix here.

Looks like you can remove the electronic portion of the unit without touching the fluid side. I will try this and see what happens. I wonder if AutoECU.com will rebuild just the electronic side?

ABS Replacement writeup

Default what year do you have?

I've been driving for several months with the controller half of the abs unit removed! 2000 don't have ESP so I'm not sure if the same is possible on '01+ cars. Since you tapped on it and it started working, I'll bet the problem is one of the relays.
My dealer told me, "list price is $13xx". I replied, "uh, that's alot of money in my book. Can I get any sort of break on this?". He went and spoke with his boss who agreed to sell for around $1000.
I just called the VW dealer who I bought our '04 GLI from. He says VW list price for pn 8E0614111E ('00 ABS) is $1006. Depending on your local VW dealer, you might want to say you have a '00 VW passat w/4-motion.

Default MY 2000

Thanks for the info. I don't know if I really want to drive with the ABS disconnected, but I am searching the web for someone who sells just the electronic part so I can replace it myself.

Default if that's the same guy, yes he will

The guy who rebuilds for $350? He said you can ship only the electronic side and use tape to secure the 12 solenoids for shipping. I'm pretty sure he said turn around was 2-3 days. As I said before, I'll bet he only replaces the relays..
