Default For All The DIYers

Hi all,

Im in the market for a 00-01 S4. Up till now I have done most work to cars I have driven, so I am pretty mechanically inclined. How hard, or possible, is it to work on these cars? Do they have to go to the dealer each time? Is it possible to change things like spark plugs, hoses, suspension components, maybe even turbos if necessary? Thanks for any info

Default to answer your question quickly w/o telling u to STA,,,

yes the S4 is very modifiable, but there are certain things you cannot do and simply need to pay for, such as turbos, they are not very easily accessable, making a turbo swap near impossible to DIY. But for the most part i have found most modifications can be done yourself...hope that sort of answers your question.

Default We do have some freaks here who drop their own engines for major jobs...

but turbo swapping is not something that I would ever try myself...but there are lots of things you can do yourself pretty easily.

Default Basic maintenance (oil change, plugs, air filter) are easy, suspension is pretty easy, but

aside from that, the car is a bitch to work on just because everything is so crammed together in the engine bay. There's just not a lot of room to work. If you're used to working on your own car, unless it's a late model German car, the S4 will be more of a PITA.

Default There are people here who have DIY'd anything you can think of...

That being said, lots of it is real tough. All the routine maintenance items are quite easy though. (Plugs, fluid change, minor mods...)

Suspension is an easy DIY if you have nice spring compressor. If you don't thwack everything around too much, and don't go insanely low no alignment is needed!

VAG tool helps in almost every circumstance.
