As you all know my previous motor had a bizarre failure on the passengers side cam bank due to copious amounts of oil leaking out the camshaft seal onto the sprocket. But why? My camshaft snapped near the bearing cap and was driven at an odd angle for the entire time I owned the engine (3000 miles or so).
This explains some of the oddities I was noting in cylinder 1 and bank one in general on that engine as well as the oil spewing from the sprocket. The frontmost bearing on the exhaust cam was mushroomed to the point it was 50% wider than its original size! A fine metallic paste surrounded that area.
The cam fractured at the lobe and was being driven by the front portion of the camshaft under the lobe. We do have a chicken and egg scenario here: Did the lobe portion of the shaft snap due to the slipping cog and the force of valvetrain impact or the other way around? Because of the fact that the car ran for a good 10mins prior to failure, I'd have to go with the former. Good thing it died as it did or I'd probably still be driving on this engine with a massive oil leak despite seal replacement, and pending destruction.
I thought it fishy that the engine was presented with no plastic over the passengers side cog and was in pretty questionable shape when I picked it up. But it was in time and turned over fine, with good compression. It was obviously hit hard on that side, probably from a hard frontal collision, despite the sellers presentation of paperwork (which I still have) to the contrary. Does anyone know where to find a VIN on the engine block?
Previous pictures I took of the valvetrain on that side show the cyl1 exhaust lobes being at a slightly odd angle. This shaft has been snapped (but keyed into itself) since I bought the engine. Amazing it lasted so long being how hard it was run.

wow mike, wow.
Its almost somewhat of a relief. At least we know that it was most likely a result of some type of collision and not that you exploited a weak point of the 2.7T having so much power pushed to it. I cant believe it lasted as long as it did with the amount of HP and torque you subjected it to!

Indeed...
I'm still trying to get in touch with the guy that sold it to me (nobody on here). I know where he lives though, but it's up in CT. I was actually smart enough to have him write me up a warranty. Dunno if I'll get anything, but I should due to the misrepresentation.
