Anti-Sway Bar Poll -- 19mm vs. 22mm

Is 22mm (set to "soft") overkill for the S4?

Steve Sherwood 03-28-2001 01:07 PM

Had both...recommend 19mm in soft or hard setting (in combination with aftermarket adj coilovers)

Supposedly 22mm can crack your subframe. Intrax is coming out with a 22mm bar with aluminum support

brackets to help transfer the torquing force over a wider area. If you want a 22+mm bar, wait for the Intrax setup to come out.

As far as 19 vs 22, it's personal preferance. Do you want your car to understeer, be neutral or oversteer? What kind of setup do you have currently? What will it be in the future? etc

My setup will be H&R Coilovers plus either a 19 or 22mm bar....

I currently have the 22mm bar but haven't installed it yet. They come with 2 hefty support brackets which supposedly should alleviate the subframe cracking issue. What do you think?

Re: Anti-Sway Bar Poll -- 19mm vs. 22mm

... Not if you intend to track the car. And the subframe problem relates to earlier-design mounts. If you do the rear, install a lighter A4 front bar up front and do coilovers. Otherwise, the system won't be balanced. Do NOT do this for a 100% street car--leave it alone.

If you already have the 22mm bar, put it on and try it out. If you don't like it, switch to a 19mm

and sell the 22mm. I don't think you'll loose much resale value by trying the bar for a week or so.

The Nuespeed bar has fairly substantial supports - I can't imagine bending them - I vote for 19mm

19mm seems perfect!!!

Bubba-SanŽ 03-28-2001 01:28 PM

I just did track event with 19mm bar on soft.

I wouldn't change a thing. I could load up the front and rear tires equally. (F and R tire temps were equal after run) The car felt stable but the rear end would definitely step out if coaxed.

IMO anything more would be unnatural oversteer (for this car).
