Default Anybody here change oil at 1K just to change weights.

I have been using Mobil1 5W-30 in my 00 sedan just because the guildelines suggest this. I plan to drive my car from DC to LA and want to switch to 0W-40. Should i just do the oil change when I get there instead?? Just scared about the long drive and wanted to protect my car as much as possible. any advice??

Default Changed my oil after only 850 miles, reason is because

the oil has been in the car since 9/03 (8 months old). I wasn't sure myself if I really needed an oil change but my conscience was eating me so I just did it.

Does oil go bad if it's just sitting in the engine?

Default Heat from a long drive will clean up everything, then drain it. K03 oil lines need 30 weight, not M1

M1 5w-30 is less than desirable, but it is ok in the sense S4 lines are not as big as 1.8t lines and the flow will be better. However, I think a light 40 like M1 0w-40 is fine, it shears to a mid-30 soon anyway. What might be ideal (if you can't find "GC") is Saab Synth 0w-30 aka Euro M1 Polar Long-Life...$3.75 a liter on closeout. Good for extended drains, Saab goes 22,000 miles on it. A lil heavier than US 30 weight M1, which is not even sold in Europe. That stuff is fine for a Honda, not an S4. I change every 6 months up to 9000 miles on German Castrol Syntec 0w-30, factory-fill in many Audis. Available only at AutoZone, must say "Made in Germany" on the back, aka "GC".

ps You can mix grades of M1, Mobil says so. Add some 15w-50 if possible to thicken it a tad. M1 30 weights are on the thin side of 30, GC is on the heavy side, actually thicker than M1 0w-40 after shearing, but GC does not thin.

http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum;f=1</a
