The cars are SO similarly specced out-hard to ignore that the Mitsubishi did not influence Audi when designing the B5 S4.
Both sure have their engines STUFFED in!<ul><li><a href="http://www.cjbyron.com/3000GT.htm">3000GT VR4 Specs</a></li></ul>

We're not too much lighter at 3600 lbs, the VR4 is 3781 lbs
It also has 4 wheel steering which adds weight. Both cars still have a V6, AWD, a 6 speed, are biturbo, heavy, and have lots of electronics. Common mods for both cars are also the same (like gutting the precats).

I've owned both and would never have thought to compare the two. To me the 3000gt vr-4 is just one big heavy gizmo with a cheap interior and boy-racer looks, while the s4 is a sophisticated touring car. True they are both heavy with a twin-turbo v6 and awd, but thats where it stops in my opinion. I would guess that the original Audi Quattro from the 80's was probably an inspiration for the 3000gt though given the sporty shape and awd...
