Default Anyone using a Mahle OC 51 oil filter? Huge sucker, holds like 1L of oil.

Even has a fitting on the end to allow you to twist with a screwdriver for leverage when removing it.

I asked a local shop for a 2.7T filter, and was given this. I've always used dealer filters and exact Mahle/Mann OEM-replacement filters, but I was told this one was a universal fit.

A larger oil capacity can't be a bad thing for this engine?

Default i used those until i put an oil cooler on my car

the shop i worked for uses them on most longitudinal 1.8T/V6 applications. i think benefits would be negligible, but it cant hurt

Default Looks like the one I use on my wife's Passat 1.8T

In that case, the screwdriver thingy comes in really handy because the filter is in a dumb@ss spot and it's hard to get other tools in there.

Default it acts as small oil cooler

once I used it on my car during the summer and noticed lower oil temperatures during regular driving :-)

Default Yup it's for the 1.8t when they had sludge problems.

I've had a few on my car and it wasn't difficult to get off and on. You'd need a pretty thin filter strap to slip over it though. And yes, it's a big *****.

Makes sense. Okay, it's going on this afternoon... Hopefully will see a few degrees lower temps...

Default you won't see lower oil temps. I've run the larger filter for a while now with no

appreciable difference

Default

So basically, I'm just making my oil changes more expensive. Dammit.

Default well, that, and there's one other concern with using that larger filter

it has a bypass spring set at 3 bar, where the stock filter is set at 5 bar. (I think those are the right numbers.)
So, in theory, the larger oil filter will let "stuff" by quicker than the stock one.
