Default APR or PES/GIAC w/Tip chip?? Opinions/Experiences please!!!

I posted this on the A6 forum, but it seems many dont have their 2.7T chipped.
Maybe you guys with the S4 Tips can help me out!!

I have narrowed it down to these two companies. I was wondering what are your experiences with these companies.

The main concern I have is that I have a Tip Trans.

Has anyone chipped their 2.7T with the APR chip? Can the trans handle it?
I contacted APR and they said that they have had no problems with owners who have chipped their 2.7T with the Tip trans.

I also looked into the PES/GIAC chip with the Tip chip also.
What does the Tip chip do? Does it help the trans adapt to the extra torque? or does it just reduce the shifting time?

I need feedback from the guys who have chipped their cars with the Tip trans.

I also plan to keep this car for awhile. Will it have any long-term effect on the reliability/maintenance of the car?

Thanks in advance...

Default Hehehe since I'm the defacto tip representative today, I'll answer...

I have the GIAC ECU and Tip chips.

The jury is out on wether the tranny is going to suffer because of the chipping. One line of thinking is that it definitely will. The other line says the tranny was designed for a particular life span (say 200,000 mi) and the maximum torque rating (310 ft. lbs) is the maximum estimated to achieve that lifespan but no actual damage will happen with the extra torque, just shorter overall lifespan.

The tip chip makes the shifts faster/more obedient. Supposedly it helps the tranny because the shifts ARE shorter (so tranny slips less) and I've heard the GIAC chip increases oil pressure somewhat in the tranny to help a bit too.

The tip chip was noticible to my wife (A4 2.8 tip) who vastly preferred the shifting to her stock tip.

Chipping a tip S4 gets you to about the stock 6-speed times, this is a MAJOR improvement. You knock close to a second off 0-60 times. Chipping the 6-speeds gives less of a performance gain.

I found a ZF dealer replacement form on the Audi e-site but haven't heard of anyone on this forum having a tip replaced (chipped or otherwise).

Default thanks, a couple of more questions...

is the giac chip smooth when compared to the stock chip?

and the tip chip, does it shift smoothly?

i know i can get the spare ecu if i get the engine chip, but can a spare ecu be bought for the tip chip also?

i was leaning towards the giac chip bc i live in nj and pes is located not too far away from where i am.

Thanks again...

Default answers...

One of the cool things about the GIAC stuff is that it is usually installed socketed, so you can literally plug the chip in and out. I doubt the dealer would ever know you had a tip chip.

As for smoothness, I think the fact the shift is just out of the way is smoother than it being drawn out long after you asked for it. In my mind it only enhances driveability and doesn't make the car "harsher" at all.

I think the difference with the tip chip would only be noticeable to someone who drove a tip daily and I can't see that it could have any negative impact on the life of the tranny. The ECU however...
