Default APR Stage 3 01 S4 vs 01 M5

I'm debating buying a bone stock 01 M5 vs getting an 01 B5 S4 and upgrading to stage 3 APR (or equivalent with competitors). With the upgraded turbos and components, will the S4 be as reliable as a stock M5?

Default If it has been well maintained and not abused, I think it would be as reliable...

IMNSHO, of course... :P

Default No highly modified performance car is going to be worry free...

but as stated below, it will definatly be faster then the M5. How far do you have to drive to work every day?

Default

a stage III S4 should at least be more reliable than a K03 S4

Currently i only have to drive ONE mile to work but that could change to SIX miles in the near future.

Yeah, I drive about 4-5 miles to work everyday...
So, like me, the reliability doesn't really effect you too much - so I'd go for theS4 + k04's.

Hell, you can drive w/o a radiator for a mile.

Default That's what I'm thinking. It moves the point of failure elsewhere...

...like the transmission.

Default I know a guy with an M5 - he has to carry around oil to keep it topped off cause it uses too much!

I've heard that's a common issue with M5's but don't take my word for it. That's just what I've heard. You're probably going to have trouble either way most likely. Both have their issues right out of the box.

I've experienced most of the S4 issues and most can be easily remedied with a better aftermarket component. I haven't had failed turbos and I'm almost at 70k miles. I almost wish they would fail so I could justify upgrading

..depends on the driver though
