Default Attention Toy Guy or other crafty machinist....

Have you ever seen the cam alignment tool used when changing the timing belts? Would it be possible to make or modify one so as to be able to change the cam timing by 5 degrees. I have had very good results when retarding the cam timing on motorcycles. It will shift peak torque power up by 200-400 RPM. I have seen that the Vishnu people have done this on the EVO with great results.

I would like to see the tool have a degree wheel of some sorts to precisly measure changes.

Any takers???

Default i've not seen the cam alignment tool

is it not possible to use a standard timing tool that non-s4ers use to adjust degrees of timing?

Default Hijack! --->

How about modding a Forge BPV to this. Troy was going to look into it last May. Never heard back from him.

I have groove specs. Email me if interested. Thanks.

Default Interesting idea...

5 degrees might be a bit much though.

You could build a circular plate, with different bolt holes that give different degree offsets, Advance on one side, retard on the other.

Bolt the plate to the cam, then the locking tool to the plate.

Default Although, after giving this more thought I'm not convinced that it would work...(m)

Altering the base timing will be known by the ECU given the two (2) hall effect sensors G163 and G40 located on the exhaust cams. These sensors coupled with a signal from the crank position sensor G28 all have to relate to within (+/- 6 degrees)IIRC. Also altering the exhaust cam in terms of timing might not yield the expected results in intake cam timing because the cam chain tensioner mechanism will probably compensate somehow.

Gut feeling is that the ECU will throw a DTC regarding "cam pos sensor implausible signal" or
"17748-P1340 Crankshaft-/Camshaft Pos.Sens.Signals Out of Sequence"

Anyway since the cam gears ends are cut in a way that are essentially keyed, one could make a new hall rotor that has the specific amount of advanced/retarded degrees.

I will try and come up with some ideas for both applications.

But after all the only way to really find out if it will work is to do it!
