if it was a early model me, they were known for spinning some type of crank bearing. It has since been fixed.

Default I think it is production dates of 10/01 to 12/01 that had

the wrong connecting rod bearing that is over spinning. All other production dates are not seeing this problem.

Default Funny story>>>

my Dad is towing my brothers GTI down the road with a chain when a NH state trooper drives by.

He turns around and follows them for exactly two miles, then turns on the lights and pulls them over in sight of the garage they were going to.

Trooper hassles them a bit and then tells them that in NH you can only tow a car that way for two miles and writes them a ticket.

So they are sitting there, 500 yards from the garage and my Dad asks if the two miles resets after a ticket...answer NO. Trooper tells them to call a tow truck BUT then says, I can't sit here all day waiting so I am going to turn around and leave now, by the way there are no other Troopers in the area, have a nice day..." and drives off.

Needless to say they got back without the truck.
