Default Brake BT: Why won't the rear piston retract?

Trying to replace the rear pads yesterday

Fortunately, NJAleBrewer had a 'real' piston retractor tool...something like this:
<img src="http://www.dieselgeek.com/images/metalnerdbraketoolsm.jpg">

The driver's side was a piece of cake, even though we forgot to open the reservoir (DUH)

Started on the passenger side, and even with DutchDaddy lending his prodigious strength, the damn piston wont retract!

We eventually broke the pin holding this tool together (it holds the piece that 'locks' into the piston to the screw that applies the pressure), but even after a late night home depot run to find cotter pins, we couldn't get the piston to move...we ended up breaking a cotter pin

The brakes work fine...we reinstalled the old pads, and I'm back in business, but I do need to replace those pads

Any idea why that piston won't retract?

TIA

Try it again with the bleeder screw open. Otherwise the piston might be seized.

Default Wouldn't a seized piston affect braking though?

The car seems to brake fine

If the rear brakes do about 20-30% of total braking, missing 10% of your braking is hard to notice.
