BRIDGESTONE BLOWTENZAS!!!! (read this)
In the past two months, I have blown out not one, but two of these supposedly "high performance" piece of garbage tires. (they never EVEN possessed ANY handling ability, and they are even less dependable in the snow.)
I do not believe that hitting a minor 1" to 2" pothole (you can't miss them in the city) would constitute, splitting the tire at the bead seal. The other pothole dented the rim and the sidewall ripped at the seam. These tires are a nightmare!
And these Avis rims....well that is a whole other story. So now I am out 2 tires and a rim. What the hell is up with that?!

Don't bag on the 040s unless you took them to their limit and can justify...
that they don't perform like they're supposed to.
Hitting a pothole has nothing to do with performance. You may have had a bad set of them.
I've autoxed with the stock tires. They do their job and hold up pretty well. They aren't track tires but I've yet to have a problem with them. I'm going to also keep punishing them until the cords show. Unless you've given these tires a serious workout, don't blame them b/c you hit a pothole.
I've hit potholes before and bent some rims. Even the highly touted TUV approved ones. If you've bent your rims, you hit a pretty hard pothole. I should know cause NYC may just be the capital of potholes.
Check your air pressure too. Get them up so you've got more air to bang around than rim. Problems are solved by solution, not by complaining.
Sorry, just don't like seeing these tires not get even a decent am't of approval.

Oh, and to make you feel better...
The RE040s aren't nearly as bad as some other high performance tires.
You want ****-poor quality? Take a look at the Continental ContiSport Contacts. They come standard on the Merc S500 Grand Editions. Three tires on the same wheel in three months. My Tirerack salesperson and I are like brothers now.

What size? if you're gonna lose 'em, maybe i'll buy the next four months worth in SportContacts...
S500 takes 255/45/18s. Toss 'em out here to Jersey if you've got the right size.
Finally, I know what you've gotten yourself into.
Very nice. Everytime I pass by a Boxster, I look for the "S" logo. You definitely got the right one!

One of the few, the proud, the...
******* that beats up his RE040's on the track and auto-x. They aren't bad tires. I like the amount of traction they give, and they break away predictably. I've hit quite a few potholes, bumps, rocks, bounced off track berms and other assorted ****, and they're still in good shape. Well.. Mostly good shape, aside from some missing tread :P
I keep them at 40F/45R. No problems after 10k miles.
