Well definatley with a warranty and also a 2001.5 or newer. Major service is timing belt and water.
pump that needs to be done at 60k miles. That is going to cost you around 1100 dollars or so. Keep that in mind when looking at cars/pricing. Sniff under the hood for oil burning smell or anitfreeze smell. Check the expansion tank for cracks/ after run pump for leaks and fresh divortor valves and throtle body boot would be something I would change asap. I would also change the tranny fluid if you are getting a tip. Brake pad linning as these cars can eat some brakes and a also make sure you don't get any funny smells from the vents when you turn on the heat. Check the windows for any clicking noises as they go up or down and the sunroof for any creaks or groans while closing. Instrument cluster, make sure it works and no lines are missing from the cluster.
Tie rods, get them checked out and cv boots. Make sure no tears. I would also stay away from a rust/snow belt car.
Get the vin number, call AOA and see what warranty work was done. If all the service was done at the audi intervals and the previous owner changed the oil more than once every 10k miles esepcially if there is no evidance of synthetic oil use. Drive the car when it is butt cold and make sure you don't hear a siren noise coming from the engine. That to me and others is the beginning of the end. The end could be 4 weeks or 4 years or never but it is not a comforting sound!!
I always get somebody to start a cold car while I stand behind it to see if any blue smoke comes out of it. If it smokes blue in any way during cold start up, walk away. Can't think of anything else and I didn't check my grammer or spelling.
