Default Can a "L" ECU be replaced with a "M" ECU????

Both are from 2001 S4s... can they be swapped?
or is it better to stick with the same ECU letter? (wanting to buy a chip with a spare ECU... and the spare is an "M")

No, the L is for an automatic, the M is for a manual car. You can swap an M and a T ECU.

Default You can swap an 'AA' for an 'L'

The AA is the supercession to the L that came on 2002 TIPs. I have a spare that I may consider parting with. Email me if you have an offer in mind.

How much do you want for the AA? is it stock? consider trade+cash for a GIACX L box I have?
