this is for a 2001 allroad however but I imagine it would be the same or at least very similar. The brown plate to the left of the waterpump. Basically I'm overheating unless heater is on (for those of you who don't already know - even after bleeding the system for air) All started happening after replacing my secondary waterpump =/ Anyway, I want to try replacing the t-stat only...I don't have the funds at the moment to do the timing belt while I'm in there so just replacing the stat for now should suffice. I'm hoping its the cause for my problems since the lower rad hose is way much cooler than the upper rad hose. Also, do I have to put any gunk on the edges when putting the stat back in? TIA

I've taken the front end off before, it'll take me about 40 minutes to do, so no labor charges =) ..
I just want to know the location of the thermostat and if theres anything else I need to do in order to get to it.
