Can you fix two bent rods in the B5 engine without replacing engine?
Hi Guys.
I am hearing that I can replace the rods in my engine without having to buy a new engine...is this true? Is it more cost effective to do this? As I posted yesterday, I bent two rods in my engine, and might have to replace entire thing. Looking for most cost effective method.
Thanks for the responses yesterday.

you don't need to replace the motor, but thats a pretty expensive rebuilt
the motor will need to come out, and the entire bottom end rebuilt. you'll likley need to replace all the rods so that the motor will stay balanced

Depends on many things. Items to consider...
Was there damage done to the crank? If the rod took that much damage, the crank was bound to have taken a hit as well. It must be checked.
How are the main bearings? Same issue as the crank.
How are the pistons? Did they deform, crack?
How are the cyl. walls? If the rod bent, did the piston scrape the walls?
You really won't be able to tell untill you bust the engine open.
It must have a full inspection.

most cost effective might be to swap out the motor for a good condition recycled unit.
but replacing a rod vs. replacing an entire motor at Audi full retail value, sure, it's prob a better value to repair the damage. That's pending there is limited damage to the rest of the motor. I don't know enough about the 2.7 in a bent rod situation to know what kind of crank, bearing, or cyclinder wall damage would occur in just such a situation.
