I've had this sound for awhile, and it seemed like it went away for a long time, now it's all of a sudden coming back after I got my oil changed...this car is really frustrating, I'm really getting fed up with it.

Could be valve noise - what is the new oil? You might need some heavier oil - I know all say 0-30
but in 2000 they said thick, so your valves might like some real oil, not this water that saves turbos. How many miles you got?

If you can hear it, its probably not detonation.
The knock sensors pick up the sound and back off way before you can hear it, because if you can hear it, it can flay the innards of your engine.
I've always felt it was imporant to puts around at medium throttle to ensure I know I've got a good tank of gas before really stomping on it, since at WOT the engine is too noisy for the knock sensors to work and I could cause damage if it started pinging at WOT.
s4Rocket might be right, the 2.7t is the nosiest engine I've had in a car in the last three or four cars I've owned. The lighter the oil the more mechanical noise it makes.

Well...
If you've got audible detonation there is something wrong with the knock sensors or some related system. Audible detonaion means it is severe! Generally, the knock sensors will stop detonation even before you can hear it. In extreme cases you'll here a click or two before the computer steps in but that should be it.
Look at the car with a scanner and see if the computer is pulling out ignition timing. If not, and it is truely detonation get it checked ASAP. Detonation can DESTROY an engine in a very short period time.
As for improper break in, the answer is no.
