Fuel Cell and V1. That's it. Its only 32-40 hours of driving. and you only need to average around 85
mph to make it in record time (reading Cannonball by brock Yates right now, highly recommend). Its about saving time in the stops (or fewer stops) if you're going for a time run. And 14 gals at <15 mpg means LOTS of stops.
However, if you're going to do gumball, then wtf, its about running with the porsches and lambos...big party. Supe it up all you want, cause everybody else is oging to do the same thing. Hell, they run full euro-spec RS4s in the gumball all the time.

O.CT sells a cool tank that fits in the spare well. I don't know if it has the "early torque option"

Only 85???? I drove like a manic from Philadelphia to Jackson, WY...
and averaged 77 mph for the whole trip via the Audi trip computer. I thought I would do better as I was driving fast the entire time. Spending hours at a time driving between 90 and 110 yet I still couldn't get my average above 80. That was a distance of 2250 miles or so. If 85 is your goal; remember for every minute you are sitting behind a truck or some SUV not paying attention to left lane laws doing 70 you will need to spend a minute doing 100 to get back your 85 average.
I would think averaging 85 would be tricky unless you have wide open road the whole way. Just my $0.02.

oh hell yea, i'm not for a minute saying you can do it without driving over 85....
Just that you gotta limit your stops and slowdowns as much as possible. The fewer you got, the higher your top speed is, obviously, and fuel tank capacity accounts for vast majority of your stops. I'm not even sure its possible to break the 32.57 (whatever) record anymore due to the sheer volume of cars on the road, but if you're going to try - get a big *** gas tank.
they were going 120+ back in the cannonball days, but in cars of the times. The S4 is easily capable of 120 bone stock, so I think the key is to time your dparture/arrival fom NY to LA to avoid traffic, liit your stops (fuel) and to drive smart and safe...Its not so much to mod up your car for track conditions (heavy accleration is not what its about)
that's all.
