Had the exact same problem with quarts running off the older Delta stock system. As an experiment, have them test the speakers with an aftermarket head unit and your amp, skipping the audi head unit and the line level converter. If it's anything like mine, the direct connection makes ALL the difference..and my guy used a beat up, cheap sony receiver they had lying around.
I then got the blaupunkt head unit and changer with red lighting to match the dash. 100% better, went great with the quarts. New head units aren't as expensive as you think..you've already got the expensive part, the amp and nice speakers..make them sound good with a good head unit and direct connection.
Addition to audio forum post: Just noticed it's an S4. I guess it's a bit different with the larger S4 head unit and might be a bigger pain to switch, depending on how picky he is about the sound. I still suggest the trial with an aftermarket head. Let us know what he ends up with.
