Cure for constant CEL on air/fuel ratio
Good Lord I was not prepared for the amount of maintenance this car takes! So I have a '01.5 tiptronic and even though I read this forum and VWvortex alot before buying I was still not prepared for the bi-weekly trips to service....it is really getting frustrating. Over $5k has been spent in the past 2 years, we just rolled 80k this weekend and she is bone stock!
Anyway I keep throwing a air/fuel ratio code now. It has been happening for the past 6 weeks now. I will clear it and w/in 48 hrs it is back. Whats wrong now? My mechanic has gotten to the point where he hates my car and hates to see me....and he's a personal friend! I really want to take care of it myself if I can. Please tell me its something simple like the MAF needs to be cleaned. Also the only non stock thing in the car is the K&N filter I put in about 6 weeks ago Please don't tell me the extra airflow provided by that filter is throwing the A/F mixture off that bad.
Thanks in advance guys...I went from a modified 1.8t Jetta with zero problems to this stock S4 with nothing but problems. The sad thing is that all maintenance has been done at the proper times by the dealer it was purchased at! Not to mention alot more that has just gone wrong It NEVER ends and my wifes dream car is now becoming her nightmare car. She literally has started to have nightmares about breaking down on the side of the road now!

sorry to say, chances are the K&N oil, i mean air filter, probably ruined your maf
i've never heard of anyone having good luck cleaning them, but you can try. Switch back to OEM paper filter and hope your MAF isn't shot.

Your car has the Hitachi MAF which from what I have seen is just about unbreakable.
You need to supply more information about the fault codes and maybe some long term fuel trim information to get any reasonable help.
Good luck.

So no one is using K&N filters around here? Does anyone know if the MAF in this car is at all like the MAFs in the 1.8t motor? I only say that because I never had, and my 3 local friends here in town have never had any problems with K&Ns in their cars.
I was told use brake cleaner to clean the MAF...is this true?

Electrical contact cleaner or submerging the MAF in isopropyl alcohol would be a better option.
Over-oiled K&N filters are known to cause problems. Many prefer to stick with the stock paper filter... it flows just fine.

So I just ran down to the dealer to talk to the service advisor. I start the convo by telling him I keep throwing CELs for air/fuel.....he cuts me off right there and says, "Let me guess you put in a K&N air filter didn't you"....OMG WTF how does a product that K&N guarantees to cause no problems cause problems???
So he tells me to switch back to the OEM paper filter stat and pray I didn't ruin my MAF. So I bought a OEM filter and am going to soak the MAF in alcohol tonight and hopefully I won't be replacing a $300 part because of ****ing K&N!
