Custom Exhaust Questions....
Looking to get an exhaust fabricated by one of my friends... I have a few questions... (Ive searched for hours)
The tentative plan was to use 3"-3.5" piping with pre mandrel bent bends welded together with a high flow cats/or test pipes, with somesort of high performace muffler. Now I havent been able to get a GOOD look under the car to see exactly how everything works...
Anyone have a good (birdseye view) picture from underneath?
1) Would 3.5" exhaust truly be beneficial?
2) Would it be gnarly loud with piggy pipes, test pipes, and performance muffler? How about noise with the high flow cat?
3) Noticible performance gains with the above? (I know there is a constant debate on aftermarket exhaust/power gains) Just dont want to lose power with not enough backpressure?
4) Would any other metals be suitable? Its my understanding that with a mig welder, steel would be easiest.
5) Any links/info in regards to the sale of the raw pipes?
Thanks in Advance, Much appreciated.

its not worth the work to do that
just buy and new or used exhaust. You wont get noticable performace gains from a 3.5 tube, and its better to just buy a single mandrel bent tube than to weld a bunch together.
piggie pipes will get you performance, but dont use test pipes, you cant pass emmisions and your car will pollute more than a steel factory.
check the classifieds for used exhausts. I also have one for sale if youre interested. APR non stealth (LOUD) version.

well here you go

I have custom dual 2.5 to 3.5 exhasut...with high flow race cats....the good ones will set you back $600 to $800 EACH. I just sent my car to Jeff Moss and he said my car was only loosing about 5whp compared to 25whp with other "race" cats....I also have a can on there..not really a muffler....system sounds awsome.

Go testpipes they will make your car sound crazy and also you will lose some lower... more
torque but gain alot more higher end torque. The set up I have right now is piggiepipes, testpipes, and vm3. When I gas my car hard my car get REALLLY loud!!!

I just did somewhat of a custom exhaust...Sound Clips coming soon.
Anyway my theory is that 3" is too big and won't help you gain much power. 2.75 would have been ideal but I wanted to try stock 2.5" first. So I opted to use the stock exhaust, cut out the resonator weld a pipe in place and use the end piece of a Scorpian exhaust. Call me ghetto if you want, i don't care. Its a bit louder, yet not too obtrusive, than my old Borla/Neuspeed exhaust during idle or cruising but pretty damn quiet on the freeway which is what I want. I'm running piggie pipes as well and @ WOT my car sounds pretty damn mean with a throaty note. My torque is still there and definitely better high end (FATS test confirmed this - shaved off nearly half second, 0.4 to be exact) I like to think that if two cars were racing in a quarter mile, 0.2 seconds faster gives you a bit more than half a car length on the other car.

Burns is great to deal with,,, they also sell seconds (does it matter how it looks?) I did a
custom 3" side exit exhuast and all the intake tract piping on my VR6 when I went turbo, they were easy to deal with.

3" with custom rear section...
No real performance gains when I pulled the rear muffler (left just the center resonator) since it was a Borla to start with.
All 3" stainless..stock cats.
Sound? Yeah...gnarly sounds about right! I love it..my wife hates it.. um, which makes perfect sense...
Not sure about the 3" versus 3.5"...someone more knowledgable can jump in here
