Damnit, I get a whiff of burning oil everytime I get out of my car
I smell it for a split second, but when I lift the hood and sniff around, I can never smell it again. Very weird. I guess I'll have a shop take a look, I can't see any oil anywhere...
Hope it's not my turbos! I'm leaving the ABT chip out until I find the leak - it's very frustrating sitting here staring at it in my room .

I just had 2 oil leaks fixed after 2 elusive years....smelled it in the cabin, and oil level seldom
dropped. It was a copper insert on one of the turbos, and a nearby gasket. Can you smell the oil burning when you have your AC on?

Not quickly, but yes...
I was under the impression turbo engines used up small amounts of oil... my oil change was about 5k miles ago and the level was about half way in the middle of the dipstick meter, so it dropped a little bit. Doesn't seem to be more than most cars I've dealt with in the past. Does that sound like it's definitely leaking?

Hmm, interesting. Once in a while if I turn in the air, without recirculating
I get a nasty smell for the first 15 seconds (I usually recirculate though). Did you get that? IT does kind of smell like something burning...
Was it the passenger side turbo?

because its you heres an opinion then im gone...had an a4 with a similar problem
couldnt find the solution till one day I opened my hood RIGHT after i shut off the engine--low and behold a minor wisp of smoke by the firewall on the right side. My valve cover gasket was leaking SLIGHTLY--the oil would drip on the hot manifold and burn off never found any drips on the floor. replaced the gasket and problem was solved. PLEASE be aware that this is a THEORY/OPINION and is absolutly wrong..but it might be worth looking at...

In my case.....
After the car got to running temps, and I came to a STOP, the burning smell would appear. If recirc was on, then it wasn't a problem. It was a passenger side turbo (in the vicinity of the pollen filter and such). If you turn on the car when it's cold, there's a distinct smell of gasoline or some other petroleum like smell...that's not burning oil, not hot enough yet (my car does this too).

Hmm, it might have been my Blitz vacuum line melting on the interior light
which I fixed, can't remember if I have smelled anything since. In any case, thanks for the input, I guess I'll check the turbos and the valve covers...

This is a common problem with the A8/S8, ...
but it's easily fixed. See the <A HREF="http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission/transealreplacement.html">'Transmission Output Flange Seal Replacement'</a> on audipages. A slow leak of gear oil in the Torsen drips onto a catalytic converter.
