Disturbing thing I noticed today (RE: Sunoco 94 Octane)
Stopped by my local Sunoco today to fill up with 94 Octane (only gas I've ever used in the S4). To my suprise, I noticed that the labels had been changed. Instead of listing 87, 89, 93, and then Ultra 94, the pump now said 87, 89, 91, and Ultra 93! I looked at the prices, and they had not changed. I looked across the street and noticed the Shell and Mobil stations had prices which just about matched Sunoco.
Now, Sunoco had always been a few cents higher when comparing their 93 to 93 at a nearby competitor's, and 94 was even more expensive. But what I realized today was that they had lowered all of their octanes, but kept the same prices. For example, a gallon of 91 octane at Sunoco cost about the same price as a gallon of 93 across the street. Not only that, but they still charged a premium for the Ultra (now only 93).
So, in a nut shell, 93 octane at Sunoco cost $2.65/gallon, but 93 octane at the Mobil or Shell literally across the street cost only $2.43; over $0.20 less per gallon!
What upset me most about this, other than realizing I had lost my beloved 94 octane, was the thought of so many people not realizing this when filling up. Since the labels look identical, I wouldn't be suprised if many people filling up with 91 octane don't even realize it since its been 93 for as long as I can remember, much less that they could get 93 octane across the street for less. I wonder how many times I've even filled up with 93 thinking it was 94, and paying a $0.20/gallon premium. Just seems shady on Sunoco's part.
Anyway, just figured I'd post this up as a PSA, so you can watch out for this. I drove around to all of the local Sunoco's, and noticed they had all changed, so this might be a statewide, regionwide, or even nationwide trend. Very dissapointing. Guess I'll be switching to Mobil or Shell.
