has problems with me. My friend's bone stock E36 M3 and my S4 are pretty much neck and neck all the way upto the speed limiter. It's not like I'm ever really "walking" away from him or he's walking on me. we're straight up dead on _even_ once we're moving.
Maybe I suck driving... (very real possibility), or he's just that much better at hitting his shift points exactly (very real possibility).
I can take him off the line (thanks Quattro), but that's about it. Rolling start... even from 20mph... and we're literally trading inches.
I think I remember to turn off the climate control most of the time... but I don't expect it to make _THAT_ big a difference. Especially if everyone's saying that the S4 should walk away from the E36 M3. Maybe it's ESP? Who knows...
I love my car either way.... it doesn't really bother me (no i honestly don't have small pecker syndrome), but it's still a curiosity to me.

It depends. Your friend could have a fast M3 from the factory? I've been able to pull
away from the ones I've run when I was stock, but doesn't mean there's not another stock E36 M3 out there that can't pull on me.

Sounds about right
When I ran my friend's manual e36 M3, it was a bit of a toss up. Sometimes he'd win (if he shifted and launched well), other times I'd win (well, me a bit more often, since he doesn't have m8d r0wing skiLLz). When he did have a good run, he'd pull on me by a fair amount.
Considering I have more weight and drivetrain loss (Tip) than you, plus I had everything on (climate control, ESP, radio, etc - not sure how much of a difference all this makes, probably not a whole lot), and was in D (the Tip can be a bit finicky/perplexing at times as to how it acts), I should be slower than a well driven manual e36m3. Figured rough rule of thumb is we're more or less equivalent to the equivalent e36m3 (manual/auto).

Stock vs. stock, it's about equal...
And will come down to driver skill. I've "jogged" away from an E36 M3 (I came from behind) with a chip, though. Err... Not that I am or anything. ;-)
