The dreaded siren noise $!@#!%!!!!
When you guys talk about the "tea kettle" noise, is that the same thing as the siren noise?
I put in a dorito not too long ago and recently started hearing the siren noise. It's most audible with the windows up, in 2nd and 3rd gear under some load and steady throttle. It modulates a bit based on how much gas you give it. It's much louder when the car isn't warmed up, but still faintly audible even with the engine warmed up. What makes this noise (hose leak, faulty DV, turbo fux0rage, etc.)?
I have an aftermarket exhaust, but haven't replaced the DVs yet. When Forge/Strat starts shipping their revised DVs, should I even bother replacing the stock ones? I don't want to give AoA any more ammo to deny my warranty.

Turbos make noise
It sounds like a siren.
The conditions you speak of sound quite normal. It is a pronounced change when things are really (fouled) up.
No the tea kettle is not the same as the siren.

I know the sound spooling turbos make...
Turbos spooling make a high-pitched whistle.
(Whistling with your teeth together)
vs.
I'm hearing a lower-pitched whistle, like an ambulance or police siren.
(Whistling with your lips puckered)

Don't assume it means impending death...
My previous S4 (2000 Tip) made the siren noise pretty loud (easily heard over radio) for 10K miles with zero problems and no lost boost ever.
My current S4 (2001 6-speed) makes the siren noise, albeit quieter, and it mostly goes away when warmed up. I'm not worried at all.
It's when the siren noise turns into a grating metallic siren noise that you might want to start worrying. :-)

no, siren and tea-kettle are not the same sound...
the death siren (as opposed to the normal one...after all what IS a siren...just like a turbo) is a combination of dentist drill and think of one of those toy siren rings you had as a kid...it's like the turbos but with a horrible ZZZZzzzzZZZZZzzzzZZZZZ undertone.
The "tea-kettle" is like the "sandblaster" ie it sounds like alot of exhaust rushing through the system (normal) BUT there is this annoying SCREEEETCH that overlays the wooshing of the air.
I tried to record it but only had a dictation recorder and the wind from the open window screwed it up.
