Is EDL an application of the ABS system or fully separate?
I was in a dealership this past weekend, and one of the salespersons began explaining to me that the EDL is completely separate from the ABS, i.e., has completely separate sensors, controlling computer, and locking mechanism. I was a little surprised, and after a little while I decided that he probably didn't know what he was talking about. I am inclined to believe that wheel spin is detected using the same sensors that are used by the ABS, that the only way that the differential is locked is by the application of the brakes, and that in general the EDL is an application of the ABS system.
Is there anyone out there that is some bona fide knowledge on this matter, and that would care to shed some light on the subject?

Like all Audi Traction Control Systems its part of the ABS...more
EDL ESP ASR (front wheel drive only) ABD all use the ABS system, some like ESP add sensors and electronics to the car, others like EDL is speed limited (50mph max in uk) all of them rely on a working ABS system (hense the importance of getting to Audi if the ABS light stays on) and all will turn off if the ABS system reaches a critical temperature (300 c i think)

Its primarily there to compensate for having no form of rear LSD (shame)
making the quattro system cheaper but prone to "violent" single wheelspin (odd on a 4wd car), however it must be noted that my MTM car seams to have EDL disabled as i can spin the wheels from start (on a damp surface) and my dealer stock cars can not !
