exhaust hanger question...

<center><img src="http://i3.tinypic.com/wiueyg.jpg"></center><p>
if i wanted to reduce the gap between the bumper and the hanger, how could i do so???

everytime i leave the garage i scrap the exhaust on the way out, when i go in (backwards) it gets hooked on the lip of the garage...

what is the best way to raise the exhaust closer to the bumper/body with out having it knock against the chasis on dips or bumps???

It's all in the alignment before you clamp down the pipe joints...

If you loosen the clamp bolts at each section and twist the pipes into an orientation/position that you like then tighten the bolts it will (generally) stay fixed there. Another thing you can do is to really jam the cat-back section of the pipes into your downpipes so that the rear tips don't stick out quite as much. My tips are basically flush with the bumper (don't stick out) because I accidentally jammed the cat-back portion in very hard to the dps....thereby taking up a few extra cm of slack.

thats the only option??? shortening it?

ive been to the dealer several times for exhaust alignment already... i thought maybe i could just swap hangers or get shorter urethane hangers... do i really have to rehang/align the entire exhaust? should i just raise the car instead?

No, I'm sure you could accomplishment some adjustment by changing hangers...

or bending the existing ones. I just haven't tried that. Maybe others can chime in.

try this

measure how much higher you want the exhaust, take off the rear section, take it to a welder, and have them grind off the metal hanger and reweld it back on lower on the can.

guaranteed to work. I looked for ages to a solution to the problem of a low hanging early version APR exhuast and determined that was the only way. its not even that hard but I never did it b/c i sold the exhaust in favor of the stealth version. it will cost you like $10 to have a welder move the hanger for you.

sounds daunting and scary, i know, but welding is not a big deal, especially not for an exhaust bracket. Make sure you tell the welder its stainless steel as they use (or at least should use) a different gas mixture (100% argon, not 75/25 IIRC) to weld SS. and have a small business welder do it, a big shop will rip you off for that kind of work that takes 5 minutes to do.

bending hangers is very hard, you have to heat them up really effing hot to do it

half inch thick steel is extremely hard to bend even when hot. but it is possible. either way the exhaust has to come off of the car.
