Default A few S4 "technical tidbits"


The crankshaft has four-bolt mains, and the middle two main bearing caps are six-bolt! ( four from the bottom and one from each side ). Audi says the variable valve timing adds appx. 10% more torque at the bottom and top ends of the rpm range. The engine employs an "After-Run Coolant Pump" that can can circulate coolant for up to 10 minutes after the engine is turned off if it is hot enough to activate the system. The fans run at 40% of their maximum output while the pump is running. The oil pump is totally immersed in the oil supply in the pan, and driven by a chain off the crank. In the 2.7 Audi adds a chain guard to help prevent oil frothing. The pistons receive a cooling spray of oil on their underside when the oil pressure exceeds 26psi. The six-speed is Audi's first to use a self-adjusting clutch with a wear compensation feature which allows a constant clutch-release load for the life of the clutch. And most important of all, this thing is an absolute blast to drive!!!!!

A service technician at the local dealership was kind enough to loan me the 70 page "introduction" to the 2.7 powertrain
that Audi produced for their service departments. Unfortunately it appears that it can not be purchased by us mere mortals. It is a great read, but it would be a lousy movie.
