First drive in rain.... more...
It rained for the first time in CA today since I got my S4 in July. Since I decided to drive my other car to work today, I didn't get a chance to test the 4wd during the day.
So, finally, after dinner I decided to go fill the gas tank (just an excuse, already 3/4 full). 2 blocks from my house, I floored it from a stop sign...
2 seconds later at about 30 mph (25 mph zone), I braked...
5 seconds later, red lights behind me...
gosh... that was stupid... i didn't even look to see that the car behind me was a police car.
After checking registration, license, etc., he let me off with a warning. He said he was surprised that my tires didn't break loose.
I'm surprised as well. All day, I was loosing traction in my front-wheel drive Mazda MX-6.
I'm glad I didn't have my radar detector out. Otherwise, I'm sure I would have gotten a ticket. BTW, how come everyone only talks about V1 here? What about Beltronics 980? It is nearly 1/2 the price and the ratings seem ok.

Yeah, I was thrilled at my first drive in the rain too... (question)
First time the car ever saw rain (got it June 2nd).
As for my question, it's about understeer while braking on curve (wet or otherwise). If the fronts lose grip and the car starts plowing, I guess there are two courses of action. One is to just stay on the brakes until the tires get their grip back (all the while, there is not much steering effect as the tires are skidding straight as the wheels are turned).
Or two, is to give it a bit of gas so that the fronts can rotate and apply directional force in the direction you want to go, despite the plowing. You're not so much trying to slow the car in its' current direction of travel, but change the direction. The turned wheel is still functioning to slow the car down in its' current trajectory. Too bad you can't have the back wheels braking while the fronts are driving - or can you?
So which is the method to use? Please note that all the above was written on an 'empty brain' since it's 6pm and I didn't eat a thing all day...
