Gave up on wheels, just switched tires...
So having found no wheels I like in the right fit, I decided to cut my suffering and added wider rubber, going to dunlop sp 9000 in 235 40 17 on the stock rims.
Look good, feel more confident, considering the dowright sloppy performance of the 040s in any snow or rain.

040s aren't the rain tire that the SP9000s are but the SP9000s also aren't...
going to give you better snow traction. They are both at the high spectrum as far as performance tires go. It's the penalty of buying max. performance tires.
You should at least get a set of winters. It'd be the right/safe thing to do.

It's not even a rain tire, Should we swap tires every time it rains, too?

You are correct, no high performance tires will be great in all conditions. However, after some research I found that the Dunlops appeared to provide a better-than-most balance.
I wouldn't have changed anything, but was really shocked at how the 040s seemed to only handle bone-dry well. This at least contributed, along with my overconfidence in quattro, to a 15mph curb incident that did 2k worth of suspension damage. I also got stuck EVERYWHERE during the three or so significant snows here in DC over the winter. This was not the case with the A4 I sold away.
I personally felt it would be prudent to switch tires...everyone else is free to stick with the 040s..in fact, anyone want a set? Cheap?

Re: Don't understand these posts, the 040 is not even an all season tire, what do you expect?
No, it isn't. It is PROBABLY better for a couple snowstorms than the 040s, and I may well get a set of legitimate snows.
It does rain, though, and I wanted a little wider.
