something else. What I was wondering is do you find this on the back of an instrument cluster that had factory nav or is it something in the wiring?

The old Nav re-used the data lines used by the Symphony
And some models (C-Navi+) can still use those lines.
I have a newer model (D-Navi+) and used the TMC/CAN-Gateway which connects onto the CAN lines shared by instrument cluster (and many other modules).
There's more info on Dan's website

http://www.tvwiz.net/navigation/issues.html</a

You need a specific TMC and have to wire it directly to the cluster in the B5S4.
Audis documentation on the CAN lines in ours cars is different from what is actually installed(Bentley docs that is). Go to Dan's page and read on installation on the B5. He has the TMC part number listed and base instructions on how to get it going in an A4. I don't think he updated the page after Dan/I figured out the S4 wiring... was not easy.
I can help with that. Find the part first, that is the first challenge. Having run both a while now the Nav+ without the added functionality of the TMC almost seems pointless. Can't imagine going back to running a setup without it... so much more useful with this component.

Nav info:

Thanks for the pic. From what I can tell, some cars came with it...
I originally had the setup where I can have my boost, volt, oil temp. Now that I installed the Nav+, I don't have any type of display. Just wondering if I can maintain that at least.

There are two different communication methods....
The Symphony radion uses what is called the "3-wire" bus (clock, data, enable). The Nav+ uses the CAN bus.
The efu (for boost, oil temp, etc) also uses the 3-wire bus, so just connect those wires back up and you should be communicating again.
The TMC will allow the Nav+ to communicte to the inst cluster, but will have no effect on the efu.
