Grinding when downshifting into second gear (more)
I was driving down the street around 50 mph and was going to be heading into a turn... The plan, because I knew that I would be slowing down rather quickly then jet across the intersection, so I tried to shift down to second gear (holding the clutch fully in) then I was going to slow down then release the cluch and accelerate out of it.
When I tried to down shift I heard the gears grind and at once shifted to neutral.
If you are going above a certain speed, will the tranny grind if you down shift it into neutral?
Thanks...

Although that's probably too fast for second gear, you might try double-clutching next time.
Or, try waiting until you've slowed down somewhat, as I'm assuming that 50 mph is your speed before braking for the turn. If your exit speed will be slower, wait to shift until braking is complete or almost complete. You might be closer to the acceptable speed range for second gear by then.
Lastly, give some thought to using third gear instead of second. It'll probably be easier to get into anyway.

yeah i agree. the double clutch would work, it did in my car after i knew my synvhros were going
black2001s4, no offense to you. i know when i posted my tranny woes, people jumped on me as a bad driver and said i should learn to drive. i am not saying that at all. but just like OW said you either need to slow down more, or double clutch to get the gears up to speed. unfortunatly our tranny is not one that can handle a downshift like that without a double clutch.
i think your tranny is ok though if you are at all worried about that, i think that they are built strong enough to handle more than their fair share of grinds.

what were the temps?
I have a problem with that if the car is cold...I'm planning on swapping tranny fluid to syn and see how it works then. But I have the exact same problem if I don't double clutch when I just start driving the car.

I was... I knew that I was going to slow down quite a bit to where I would need 2nd, (more)
I was simply switching it to second... Not trying to do any fancy racing stuff...
It was the grinding that surprised me.
