Has anyone had luck replacing just the carrier bearing on the driveshaft?

Default Has anyone had luck replacing just the carrier bearing on the driveshaft?

Or am I better off with just a new or remanufactured driveshaft?

I installed a Stern diff ring this weekend and it significantly reduced driveline lash, but I get vibration under load at speeds above 60. The carrier bearing was looking a little worn 6 months ago when I had my exhaust out, so I'm fairly confident that's the culprit.

I also have the stern bushings and ASP DTS for what it's worth.

Thanks - Dave

Default I would try to find a used unit - I have had terrible luck with a rebuilt unit.

You cannot easily replace the carrier bearing as the driveshaft must be disassembled. Your vibration is from the Stern diff ring and is normal. Your carrier bearing should have some play in it. A rebuilt Audi shaft is about a grand and aftermarket around 400-500. It can also be difficult aligning it, so please beware.

Default Thank you. Who rebuilt yours? I was looking at the Blau page and

that's what got me thinking about just doing the carrier bearing.

I realize the diff ring is what's causing the vibration. I was hoping that a new carrier bearing would lessen the vibration as it feels it's being transmitted through the driveshaft.

Reduced lash versus vibration...which is more important.

Thanks again for your input.

I would have thought it would keep it better aligned and taken out slop...

Default When you "take out slop" you increase vibration.

Case in point, what you did with the rear diff mount. Same thing applies to other things like solid engine mounts etc.

Default Understand, but I was thinking that in the case of the driveshaft, with

any play in the carrier bearing, the driveshaft won't rotate truely around an axis, which would create the vibration I feel. The stiffer mount emphasises the weak points in the driveline.

I'm not arguing for arguments sake...that's what my wife is for
