you are not supposed to downshift into first!!!! you put it into first at a stop under 1500 rpm

First off, why are you using 1st gear except for from a dead stop? Just use second unless you are trying to slide the rear around. If you have to put it in first at those revs, no syncro will save you. Blip the throttle to get the input shaft up to about the right speed and then put it in gear gently.

even worse. the drive end of the tranny is moving and the power side is stopped there is no 1st sync

WHADAYAMEAN..no first gear syncro..you got the only one then!

The syncro is only there so that you can idle in neutral at a light and then put it in first without waiting for the input shaft to spin down. First gear is too low for the syncro to be effective if the car is moving with any speed.
