Default Headlight Not working? Ballast or Igniter? Or is that the same thing?

My pass headlamp is not working. New bulb, doesn't work. Bulb from other side doesn't work but works in the side it came from.

I am ASSUMING its the Ballast? Is it that or the igniter? Or is that the same thing?

And do I just need to remove the housing to get to the ballast to replace it? Thanks

Its an 01 S4 w/ HID BTW

Default Same thing.

Ballast is in the bottom of the housing. Comes out with 4 hex screws IIRC.

Default Awesome, thanks. Will this work for an 01 S4? (I assume.... once again)

Default I don't think that will fit the B5.

Also I should correct my previous post to say that the ballast and ignitor are incorporated into one in the factory unit.

This link will show you exactly what it looks like, STFA for the part #.

https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/2389922.phtml</a

Default So are the A4 and S4 interchangable?

Default Yes, but it must be for the B5 platform.

That auction is also for the B6 and should say 2002-2005, it's titled wrong. B5 A4 is 96-01, B5 S4 is 00-02.

I did a quick search and didn't find any on eBay currently.

Default Don't feel bad, I've been hunting for a ballast for a while now. Expensive suckers!

I'm in the same boat. Pass side is out and all tests point to the ballast.

BTW, The B6 has the D1S setup which has the igniter incorporated into the bulb as opposed to the B5 which has the D2S type with the igniter in the ballast.

If I could find a way to wire in C5-A6 ballasts, I would be in good shape, as I have a pair collecting dust.

Default Ditto.....mine works for limited amounts of time. Any hard stops, turns or bumps

make it go out....but if I power cycle the lights off/on, it turns on again, only to go out again soon thereafter....sucks

Default Did you check the fuse? Mine was burning fuses.

Turned out that the insulation on the internal wiring of the housing was cracking and shorting wires.
