Default Help my engine keeps randomly shutting off while driving!!!

When I'm driving my engine will randomly shut off. I therfore have to turn the key but the engine won't turn over right away. If I pull over and wait a minute it will start up just fine....though when I try right away it does not turn over, and if it does sometimes it dies right away. Any ideas why this would be happening? My 2000 s4 has 114K and have kept up perfect maintenance.

are you chipped? may have a faulty wire in the ECU.

2nd, a failing speed sensor can cause this.

Default if your chip is that old, maybe something with the solder and the connection to the ECU?

just a thought.

Default speed sensor as in road speed?...why would the car just turn off if the speedo didn't work?

i would hate to be driving around and for my tach or speedo gauge to stop working...but to have the car just turn off because of it sounds highly unsafe...

Default If the ECU does not know the engine speed, it can not run or start...

From the Bentley Manual:

"Note:
The engine speed sensor is a combined speed sensor and reference mark sensor. Without a signal from the Engine Speed (RPM) sensor -G28- the engine cannot be started. If the signal from the Engine Speed (RPM) sensor -G28- fails while the engine is running, the engine will cut out immediately. "

Or more likely flux that hasn't been cleaned up has become contaminated. Clean the flux off.
