HELP!!!!! two days before Northeast Expo and my car won't start.....
Here's the story. Hadn't started it in 8 days since I was slowly detailing it for the show. It's a 2000 S4 with 60,000 miles on the original battery. Anyway....a few days ago, it wouldn't start...not a peep. Successfully jump started. Now 3 days later, I attempt to start. If feebily cranks once, then....DEAD!!! Battery is clearly not holding charge, radio has gone into SAFE mode and the EMCS functions of my APR ECU through my cruise control are not working. My question.....any way of telling if it's just my battery or whether it's my alternator. VAG showed no problems with either of my 2 ECU's although I was unable to access the "less common modules".

battery gauge on your dash
or ya need a voltage tester
my battery died recently and my dash gauge read properly, like 6 volts or so...
btw mine was just clicking repeatedly when the battery was dead, don't know if you have the same symptom

The voltage dropped as I put the windows up and down.....
I'm just wondering if there's a quick way of telling whether the battery itself is bad, or whether I have an alternator problem

well
if worse comes to worse bring it to a gas station or autoparts store and have em charge the battery(takes like 3 hours), if your alt is bad it'll be dead real quick...drive around locally.

You need to get the battery recharged and tested first...
If the battery is dead, it won't take a charge...it will still read dead.
If the battery does take a charge...then there is a good possibility that the alternator crapped out on you, and the car drained what was left of the battery. Either that, or someone left a light on! :-P

Buy battery tester. Check each cell, see where the little ***** float.
That should tell you if the battery can hold a charge. The testers are cheap, a couple bucks. Then go to Sears for a Die Hard with a ton of CCA for those New England winters :-)

buy a new battery... trust me. you're gonna buy one in a month anyways.
if you don't buy one now.
I replaced mine at 60k as well.
If you really want to keep that battery, you could top off the fluids in the battery with some distilled water. that should hold you off for another half year maybe.
Audi batteries do not like to be discharged.
